And as chance may have it, My Chemical Romance and The Used were featured awhile ago on NU's New Album review. Apparently the two bands had recently released a double cd album *hurrah here*. What struck me most was MCR's (yeah let's use that shortcut for now) lead singer's opinion on the whole rock genre. How rock has long been losing that sense of masculinity.
In their one song "You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison", it was based on that sense of comaraderie in between men especially since the band had been touring and hanging out closely for a long period of time. (And since they aren't the type of band who takes advantage of screwing groupies and such, they pretty much depend on each other). In a way, the bus becomes a warped jail cell. He stressed that the song may come out as something with homosexual inferences, but then again... back to rock having lost its masculinity. You see men in tight jeans, sporting girl cuts, wearing make up and their music slowly developing into something of feeling. From the hard core leather jacket image we are presented with something more human. Rock was taken into a new hype of sorts. It's crazy. I would surmise that it was the tough exterior of rock which drove people to like it at the start. Now... well... *shrug*
But admit it, guys wearing make-up is actually something eye catching. *_* It worked for Kiss anyway. But that's not the point dangit.
I have long before tried to remove myself from EMO. I never really did appreciate it as much as I do alternative or progressive. An example would be my acquired distaste for Something Corporate and the like. To be honest, I find the lyrics immature.
But I guess it cannot be helped for a brutally honest lyricist to undergo that kind of scrutiny in the end. But you still have to give them credit. They wrote what they wanted to. Plain and simple. Honesty is what music was beginning to lack anyway. Despite this, their songs don't strike a chord in my heart any longer.
But from what I understood from his words, what EMO lacked was that spark. Sure, it developed into something that delves with human nature, but it lacked glam, or perhaps that 'sex factor'. EMO was becoming bland- Rock was slowly becoming bland (AMEN) And as to whether MCR has succeeded in bringing back that excitement into the rock culture- you decide. All I'm saying is that they are definitely worth a shot. I can't even begin to associate them with another band.
<3 woohoo. wishlist item. wishlist item.
